EP01: Basic Tips for Caring Hair Extensions 【Washing】
Combing:
- Brush through the ends first and work your way upwards. This helps avoid encouraging knots, keeps your strands separate, and reduces breakage.
- To detangle the knots use a soft bristle hair extension brush, like a boar or nylon bristle brush
- Avoid excessive pulling or aggressive brushing to maintain extension quality.
- Never brush your roots. Because this is where your extensions are bonded to your head and you will damage them and potentially pull them out if you brush them. Instead, finger your hands through the roots to keep them from tangling, and then hold your hair in a fist just under your ear and then brush the ends. By holding your hair you are taking pressure off the bonds, therefore, keeping them tight.
Washing:
- Comb your hair before shampooing.
- Use a sulfate & paraben-free shampoo & conditioner that adds moisture.
- When shampooing, concentrate on rubbing and cleansing your scalp properly with your fingertips.
- Avoid any use of bond-building or protein-enriched products on the extensions--this overproduction of protein on the hair can cause the hair to feel “straw like” eventually leading to breakage.-Rinse with cold water to seal moisture into your cuticle.
- Avoid washing everyday, supplement with dry shampoo.
- Use a deep conditioner every 2 weeks to maintain quality
Drying:
- Gently dry to 80% with a hair towel.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner when damp.
- Air dry hair is not suggested, use a hair dryer to ensure a smooth finish + never go to bed with wet hair and extensions.
- You can leave the ends dry naturally if you want, but it is very important to keep the root’s bone dry.
- Another tip is to put your hair dryer on the cold setting, as it is once again, you guessed it, better for the bonds. Do not exceed the medium heat setting.
About Sleeping
- Don't go to bed with wet hair. Wet hair tends to be weaker and more prone to damage, and this applies to extensions as well. Wet hair extensions get tangled or matted when slept on. You also risk bacteria or fungi growing if you repeatedly fall asleep with damp hair. To ensure successful air drying, you want to make sure that you aren’t going to bed directly after washing and conditioning. Even if you sleep on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction, you may put dents or creases in your hair by sleeping on it before it fully dries. Additionally, you will cause frizz with any movement you make while sleeping. Make sure that if you are planning on washing your hair at night, you leave enough time for your hair to fully air-dry.
